Abstract

A casting resin comprises the reaction product of an organic diisocyanate, a polyhydroxy compound and a cross-linking agent, the quantity of organic diisocyanate being in excess of that required to provide each hydroxyl group with an NCO group and the quantity of cross-linking agent being less than that required completely to react with all the excess NCO groups, the polyhydroxy compound having a molecular weight of at least 1,000 and being the reaction product of a linear ethylene oxide polymer or a linear polyacetal having a molecular weight less than 750 and a hydroxyl number of 140 to 225 with an amount of an organic diisocyanate less than that which provides one NCO group per hydroxyl group in the ethylene oxide polymer or in the polyacetal, the reaction between the ethylene oxide polymer or the polyacetal and the organic diisocyanate being effected in the absence of a tertiary amine which contains at least two functional groups capable of reacting with isocyanate group. Suitable linear ethylene oxide polymers are polyethylene oxide, and the reaction products of ethylene oxide with glycols or diamines many of which are specified. Suitable polyacetals are those derived from aldehydes and polyhydric alcohols. The Specification lists many diisocyanates. Specified crosslinking agents include ethylene glycol, glycerine, 2,5-dichlorophenylene-1,4-diamine and p-amino phenyl ethyl alcohol. The reaction to produce the final product is effected in the presence of acid retarding agents, e.g. hydrochloric acid, benzoyl chloride or sulphur dioxide boric acid esters or alkaline accelerators, e.g. N-methyl morpholine, dimethyl benzylamine, methyl diethanolamine or triethylene diamine. In the examples, polyurethanes are made from 2:4-toluylene diisocyanate, 1:5-naphthylene diisocyanate, butane-1:4-diol and:- (1) a polyacetal derived from paraformaldehyde and butane-1, 4-b -hydroxyethyl ether and (2) and (3) polyethylene oxide and benzoyl chloride. Phenol being present in Example (2) and a silicone oil in Example (3). Specification 700,608 is referred to.
