901,164. Making magnetic heads. EPSYLON RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. Nov. 2, 1960 [Nov. 3, 1959], No. 37301/59. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A method of making a magnetic head for a tape recorder comprises the steps of winding a strip 11 of magnetic material around a mandrel 12 to form a multi-turn helix, severing the wound helix in a direction parallel to the axis thereof to divide it into a number of separate rings having their ends spaced apart laterally, forming a winding 17 on each ring and then pressing the ends of each ring sideways towards each other to close the ring. After winding the helix and mandrel are clamped between jaws 13 and 14 and the helix is cut with a saw or abrasive disc 15. The winding 17 is on a flexible or pre-formed former 19 which may have cheeks. The gap 22 is at an angle to the plane of the ring equal to the helix angle of the original helix and the completed head may be mounted as shown in Fig. 8 so that the gap is transverse to the line of movement of the tape, or may be mounted with the plane of the ring parallel to the movement of the tape. The rings may be made of a high permeability alloy and annealed after forming and cutting, to restore their magnetic properties. The recording gap is provided by copper-plating the rings with a thickness of copper equal to half the width of the required recording gap.
