909,549. Fuzes for self-propelled missiles. ANSTALT FUR DIE ENTWICKLUNG VON ERFINDUNGEN UND GEWERBLICHEN ANWENDUNGEN ENERGA. Oct. 26, 1960 [Nov. 2, 1959], No. 36812/60. Classes 9 (1) and 9 (2). A projectile having a hollow charge 2 and propellent charge 8, has a fuze system comprising a body 12 in which are housed a piezo-electric crystal 15, a condenser 13, a rectifier 14 of the semi-conductor diode type and a rotatable barrel 16 in which is embedded a primer 17. The barrel 16 is released and rotated during flight in manner known per se, i.e. by inertial set-back of a locking-member or prior manual withdrawal of a pin to free the barrel and a spring drive to rotate the barrel, to bring the primer 17 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the armed position of Fig. 3. The piexo-electric crystal 15 suffers compression due to the propellent gases acting on a deformable wall 24 and the rectifier is so orientated that the crystal is short-circuited during compression. On decrease of pressure the rectifier acts as a highresistance and the potential difference between the poles 20, 21 of the crystal causes charging of the condenser 13. The condenser, one plate of which is connected to an outer cap 4 via the main body of the projectile and the other plate to an inner cap 5 via the primer 17, the metallic casing of a detonator 18 and a metallic cone 3, is discharged when the caps 4, 5 are brought into contact, the primer 17 thereby being fired. Use of such a fuze for various types of projectiles and land mines is also mentioned.
