Abstract

909,340. Retarding devices. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 3, 1961 [May 5, 1960], No. 16022/60. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXX] A retarding device for a falling member comprises a cam driven by the member and a cam follower connected to a mechanical energy absorbing device. A device for lowering a weight 1, which may be a nuclear reactor control rod, comprises a helically-grooved drum 3 secured to a spindle 4 driven at one end by an electric motor 9 through a magnetic clutch 10, and being formed at the other end with an enlarged cylindrical portion 4a having one part of its cylindrical surface formed as a spiral cam surface 11b. The end of the portion 4a is internally threaded to receive an axially fixed screw member 8, the leads of the member 8, cam 11cand drum 3 being equal. A cam follower 12 is urged into engagement with the cam by a light spring and is connected by a lever 13 with an energy-absorbing device 14 which may be a liquid dashpot, an inertia flywheel or a friction disc. When the clutch 10 is released, the weight falls freely under gravity while the cam follower 12 rests on the cylindrical portion 4a; after a pre-determined free travel the follower rises on the cam to produce a deceleration characteristic dependent on the cam profile. In a modification the drum 3 is replaced by a rack-and-pinion mechanism.
