Abstract

909,347. Vacuum tape capstans. DECCA Ltd. Feb. 7, 1962 [Nov. 7, 1960], No. 38197/60. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] The rotary member 10 of a vacuum tape capstan which contacts the tape over a 90 degrees segment of the base of a groove 11 has a hollow interior which accommodates a solenoidoperated change-over valve 21, whose position is adjustable by eccentric means 75 and clamping means 25 such that a circumferential slot 71 in a carbon pad 73 may be closely aligned with holes 35 communicating, together with grooves 36, with the contacting face of the tape. The valve consists of a ferrous disc 60 attracted by one or the other of a pair of magnetic pot-cores 44, 45, energized by windings 46, 47 shown sealing the gap between the corewall 51 and a non-magnetic winding former 62 such that a vacuum source 21 may be put into communication with the slot 71 as shown by the arrows. On change-over, an atmospheric port 58 may be communicated to release the tape. In further embodiments, the port 58 may be connected with air under pressure to provide a quick release of pipe-drive or a light vacuum may be applied to maintain the tape slidingly in the vicinity of the groove 11. A pair of oppositely driven capstans may be connected to provide tape drive in either direction. A keeper 12 (and a stripper, Fig. 1, not shown) are provided and are made movable for tapeloading.
