Class 79(2) A vehicle which has wheels which are not normally driven is provided with a powerdriven roller movable from an inoperative position into frictional engagement with these wheels whereby they are driven. As shown, a tractor 1 has wheels 2 driven through an orthodox transmission 3 and supports the frame 8 of a semi-trailer upon a universal joint 9. A pair of rollers 11 mounted on a shaft 10 are continuously driven from the tractor drive through a power take-off device 5, a gear-box 21, a telescopic cardan shaft 19 and a gear-box 12. An hydraulic ram 15 operates on each side between a lug 16 fixed to the vehicle frame and the shaft 10 so that either or both of the rollers 11 may be brought into driving engagement with the wheel 7 or held in a disengaged position. In order to provide a larger contact area, each roller may be provided with an auxiliary roller to which it is coupled by a chain, belt or gears.
