908,952. Preventing incrustation and corrosion. CASTLE, R., and CASTLE & SON (HAWKINGE) Ltd. May 31, 1960 [June 15, 1959], No. 20393/59. Class 123 (1). Corrosion and incrustation in a closed circuit water-cooling system are reduced by adding to the cooling water a mixture of an organic sequestering agent, one or more polyhydric phenols and a buffering agent which gives the resulting solution a pH of between 7.5 and 9.0. The preferred sequestering agent is the trisodium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid. Alternatively, the disodium salt may be used. The phenol constituent may be one or more of the phenols hydroquinone, catechol, resorcinol or tannic acid whilst the preferred buffering agent is a mixture of trisodium phosphate and disodium hydrogen phosphate. Alternative buffering agents are mixtures of sodium acetate and acetic acid, sodium benzoate and benzoic acid, borax and boric acid or sodium nitrite and trisodium phosphate.
