Abstract

908,928. Abradant bands. DAWKINS, J. C. F. Jan. 7, 1960 [Oct. 24, 1958], No. 34047/58. Class 60. [Also in Group XXXVI] An endless abradant band is made from metal and has a single layer of abradant particles substantially homogeneously embedded in at least an operative portion thereof while the band is being formed by a deposition process. A metal cylinder 20, Fig. 3, externally plated with a layer 21 of base metal and a layer 22 of chromium has applied to it, along part or all of its width, a thin adhesive layer to which abrasive particles 24 are then adhered. A layer 25 of nickel is then deposited until of the desired thickness, and the endless nickel band with the abrasive particles embedded therein stripped from the cylinder. Further abrasive particles may be applied by a gravity method to the cutting edge of the band and more nickel deposited to secure them. In a modification, Fig. 7, a cylindrical former 26 is rotated in a plating bath 32. Abrasive particles suspended in the electrolyte gravitate on to the surface of the former and are embedded in the deposited metal. When this is sufficiently thick the endless band with the abrasive particles embedded therein is stripped from the former. Immersion plating may be used instead of electrolytic plating. A cylinder 36, Fig. 8, may be simultaneously sprayed with abrasive particles from a nozzle 38 and molten metal from a nozzle 40. The sprayed deposit is then stripped from the cylinder.
