Abstract

908,534. Cooling reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 16, 1961 [March 3, 1960], No. 7642/60. Class 39 (4). Pressure tubes in a nuclear reactor have slight transverse corrugations. Fig. 1 shows a corrugated stainless steel tube 4 in a reactor containing an experimental fuel element 19; an inner tube 18 re-entrant flow of coolant in the tube 4. Reactor coolant flows outside tube 4 and over fuel elements 16 which are suspended from and can be removed with plug 15a. Preferably, the diameter of the corrugated tube does not vary by more than the thickness of its wall, and the pitch of the corrugations is not less than 0.4 of the internal diameter.
