Abstract

<PICT:0908185/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0908185/IV(a)/2> A tobacco smoke filter rod is formed of a sponge-like synthetic resin substance with discrete voids therein, which voids are interconnected by passages inclined to the rod axes. In Fig. 2 the sponge, formed of cellulose or of a foamed plastic such as polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinylacetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl butyral, or polyurethane, has short fibres 15 of the same diameter as smoke particles incorporated within the plastic prior to foaming, which fibres project into the voids. The fibres may be of alpha cellulose flock, blue asbestos, spun glass, nylon, acrylic filaments, viscose, or rayon. The closed voids in the sponge are interconnected by treatment with high tension electrical discharges or electronic beams or by passing heated fine wires through the sponge. In a modification the walls of the voids are coated with a tacky substance, such as glycerin, diethylene glycol, paraffin, or sorbitol, and/or with a solution such as acetic or nitric acid which reacts with nicotine in the smoke, or with sodium bisulphate and sodium nitrate which react with aldehydes in the smoke. The surfaces of the voids may also be roughened by incorporating in the foam-forming substance finely-divided silica or calcium carbonate or fine particles of metals such as iron or aluminium.
