Abstract

908,127. Non-metallic pipes; pipe joints. COLUMBIA PRODUCTS Ltd. April 24, 1959 [April 24, 1958], No. 14121/59. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). A pipe section made of resin impregnated glass fibres and suitable as a conduit for electrical wiring is formed with male and female end portions 3, 4, Fig. 3, and consists of helically-wound inner and outer fibre layers 5, 7, Fig. 3, and an intermediate layer of longitudinally-extending fibres 6, at least some of the fibres in the layer 5 being wound to a small helix angle and having later at variations of concentration to form at least the female end portion 4 and to permit the layer 6 to be continuous and substantially straight throughout the length of the pipe so as to obtain a pipe of substantially uniform strength. The female end portion 4 is formed with a shoulder 9 and may accommodate a straight male end portion 3 of another section. In a modification, male and female end portions have interfitting tapered surfaces and either the male end portion has an exteriorly formed shoulder or the female end portion has an interiorly formed shoulder. The pipe section is formed by wrapping on a steel mandrel the layers of fibres, the layers and the fibres being bonded together by diallyl phthalate resin. A coating of a styrene based curving resin surrounds the layer 7 and the finished section is curved in air by the application of heat.
