907,936. Clutch-brake combinations. LUTZ, O. Sept. 12, 1960 [Sept. 10, 1959; Oct. 31, 1959], No. 31413/60. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A clutch-brake combination for an engine cooling fan, air circulating device or heat exchanger comprises a viscous fluid clutch having V-grooved driving and driven discs 4, 5 which may be engaged frictionally for a direct mechanical drive, the driven disc 5 of which is axially movable and carries a brake cone 18 engageable with a fixed brake cone 17 when the clutch discs 4, 5 are furthest apart. The clutch is progressively engaged by leftward movement of the driven disc 5 against a return spring 25, the fluid between the V-grooves escaping through holes 19, 20, 21. The disc 5 is connected through an oil retaining casing 5 to a rod 7 which abuts a servo 26 supplied with pressure fluid from a thermostatic control.
