The upper 1 of a moulded plastic or rubber boot is provided on certain regions with projections, 2 and 3, in the form of parallel ridges for protection of the wearer, the ridges being formed integrally with the boot during its moulding, and also with a metal toe-cap completely embedded in the material from which the boot is formed as it is moulded. The protective ridges are preferably horizontal, but may be aligned in any direction, and the direction of alignment may vary from one part of the upper to another.
