Abstract

907,581. Drying or cooling systems and apparatus. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 15, 1959 [Aug. 15, 1958; Jan. 30, 1959], Nos. 26315/58 and 3348/59. Classes 34 (2) and 64 (2). [Also in Group II] A method of correcting the performance of a rotary granule-drying or cooling container having longitudinal lifting blades comprises inserting therein, after testing the apparatus under the desired conditions of use, at least one propelling member which comprises a strip at least part of which is inclined to the axis of the container so that the propelling member is disposed at least partly within the inner periphery formed by the lifting blades of the apparatus but leaves a substantially uninterrupted passage through the container in the form of a zone surrounding the axis thereof, and is of pre-selected size, shape and orientation so that it will modify to a desired extent the retention time in the container of the particular material which is to be passed therethrough. A drying or cooling apparatus comprises a cylindrical rotatable container 1 on a horizontal axis having longitudinal lifting blades 2, 3, 4 in the form of scoop blades secured to the inner wall of the container and a relatively narrow helical strip 5 which acts as a propelling blade and which is formed within the inner periphery formed by the blades to which the strip is secured. In a modification the propelling blade is formed of relatively narrow straight strips lying in a helical formation within the inner periphery formed by the lifting blades and in a further modification the helical strips are substantially in helical formation but overlap slightly.
