[Also in Group XXXII] In a modification of the bearing assembly described in the parent Specification, a bearing 11 is supported from a bearing block 13 by means including at least three springs 12a, 12b, 12c having progressively adjustable characteristics which enable the bearing to be progressively changed from a radially isotropically substantially rigid condition to a radially isotropically flexible condition and vice versa. The tension of each spring may be adjusted by rotation of a screwed spindle 15 by means of an associated hand wheel or an auxiliary motor. Each spring may take the form of a spiral helix of a strip having a progressively decreasing width 19, Fig. 3, towards the centre of the spiral from a cylindrical outermost turn 21 adapted to contain the remaining turns when the spring is fully compressed.
