[Also in Group XXXI] A piston 2, Fig. 5, in a steering mechanism (see Group XXXI) has a pair of flexible annular packings 97, 98 at opposite ends of a duct 112 permitting free oil flow through the piston. When a road shock occurs increased oil pressure closes the inner lip of one of the packings against a cylindrical surface on a member 91 to close the duct 112. The movement of the piston is thus impeded to prevent the road shock reaching the steering column. A spillway 115 allows the pressures on opposite sides of the pistons to be equalized. Fig. 6 shows an alternative arrangement in which a spring-centred shuttle valve 120 with a spillway 145 controls ducts 140, 141 or 140<SP>1</SP>, 141<SP>1</SP> between the two sides of the piston. In a third arrangement, a shuttle valve with end closure faces is employed.
