Abstract

906,609. Indicating liquid levels. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Nov. 21, 1960 [Nov. 20, 1959], No. 39503/69. Class 123 (1). [Also in Groups XX and XL (b)] A liquid level indicator comprising a light guide, the operation of which involves the movement of liquid into and out of contact with a surface of said light guide, is provided with means for facilitating removal of adherent liquid from said surface on movement of said liquid out of contact with said surface. Light from a source 3, Fig. 2, undergoes a plurality of total internal reflections on the faces 7, 16, 8 before reaching a detector 6. When liquid is in contact with any of faces 7, 16, 8 which may be in separate vessels, reflection is replaced by refraction and the output of detector 6 falls. To avoid liquid sticking to the faces 7, 16, 8 they may be made as part of larger surfaces. A plurality of such detectors spaced vertically may determine the range within which the level lies or a detector may be coupled to a feed-back system to follow the liquid level. In a modification, the light guide comprises a hollow cylinder 21, Fig. 3, with a conical end 28, an inset block 24 serving both to reflect light to a phototransistor 30 and provide a continuous drain path from the surfaces 22.
