Abstract

906,510. Buffing wheels. CODMAN CO., F. L. & J. C. July 17, 1959 [Dec. 17, 1958], No. 24728/59. Class 60. An element of a rotary buff comprises a metal central portion 12 of the kind disclosed in Specification 866,806 and a plurality of separate " fingers " 14 extending therefrom in two annular groups each finger being formed by a length of rope of <SP>3</SP>/ 16 inch to <SP>5</SP>/ 8 inch in diameter, the rope being of the kind in which several turns of the component strands occur in each length, each rope length being sewn through along its length at about 8 stitches per inch, the stitching thread intersecting chordally of the rope a plurality of the rope strands in its endto-end progress. The element is formed by arranging a series of stitched rope lengths sideby-side and, after applying an adhesive tape 10 across their mid-length, folding them to form the two groups of fingers which are then secured to the centre 12 by peripheral teeth 15. The rope may comprise three or four strands s, each strand having at least two yarns y, suitably stitched at t to prevent unravelling, and the fingers may be arranged in lengths of alternately different diameters, e.g. <SP>3</SP>/ 8 inch and 1/ 4 inch. To facilitate the application of a buffing compound the rope should, preferably, be " soft laid " and it may comprise different fibres, e.g. in a two-yarn strand, one of sisal and one of cotton. For an 18-inch diameter buff element constructed according to the invention, rope lengths of about one foot would be folded for attachment to an 8-inch diameter centre. A series of elements of the kind shown in Figs. 1 and 2 would be assembled on a common shaft to provide a buffing wheel of the required width of face.
