Abstract
Pivalic acid (trimethyl acetic acid) is obtained by the interaction of isobutyl formate with a strong acid, e.g. sulphuric. (The Provisional Specification mentions also hydrofluoric acid, and mixtures of boron trifluoride with sulphuric or phosphoric acid). Temperatures of 10 to 120 DEG C. are mentioned. Preferably 0.5 mole or more of acid is used per mole of formate and more preferably not less than 4 moles e.g. 4-8 moles. Specification 819,108 is referred to.
