Abstract
906,090. Kilns for firing ceramics. METALLWERK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN G.m.b.H. April 5, 1960 [June 6, 1959 ; Nov. 28, 1959], No. 12037/60. Class 51 (2). A semi-continuous kiln for firing ceramics comprises a cooling chamber 1, firing chamber 11, prefiring chamber 18 and preheating chamber 8 arranged in the upper part 28 of the kiln, the ware stacked on base-plates 2 on trucks running on rails in the lower part 29 of the kiln being raised in turn into each treatment chamber by a ram 27. Cooling air drawn through a roof part 4 passes downwardly through the cooling chamber 1, out through side ports 6 into flues 7, upwardly through the preheating chamber 8, and out through roof port 10. Hot gases generated in combustion chambers 12 pass over bagwalls, downwardly through firing chamber 11, through side ports 15 into flues 17, upwardly through prefiring chamber 18, and out through roof port 21. Around firing chamber 11 is a sheet-metal casing 22 forming a jacket having an air inlet 23 and an outlet 24. Each truck has sand seals 25 engaging the chamber walls. Gases leaving chambers 8 and 18 by ports 10 and 21, respectively, may be used in drying chambers disposed above said chambers, Fig. 5 (not shown), one of said drying chambers being under reduced pressure. In a modification, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the treatment chambers are arranged in a square and the trucks are moved therebelow by a turntable through which the charging rams pass in the operative positions.
