Abstract
<PICT:0905988/III/1> <PICT:0905988/III/2> A method of fabricating a composite layered structure upon a substrate surface comprises applying a first layer of cinder-like aggregate particles so as to be bonded to the substrate surface in a partially embedded condition, and applying a filer layer of an aggregate/binder composition to said first layer. In one example, cinder-like aggregate particles 5, Fig. 1, are partially embedded in a layer 4 of fluid adhesive applied as by spraying to a substrate 3 which may comprise concrete, asphaltic paving, wood, rock, brick, metal, foamed plastics &c. After the layer 4 has set a cover layer 6 in a dough-like or semi-plastic state is rolled into the interstices between the particles 5, with or without the interposition of an adhesive bonding film 8 sprayed over the projecting particles 5. Finally a dusting layer 7 of aggregate particles may be applied or rolled into the surface. In Fig. 2 the layer 4 is omitted and the cinder-like particles 10 are partially embedded in a soft concrete substrate 9. Tubing and panel sections may be constructed by applying the cinder-like particles to a suitably formed substrate base, by partially embedding these particles in a layer of fluid adhesive applied over the base when it is of metal, fibre or other sheet material or by partially embedding these particles into a substrate of glass fibre matting impregnated with resin or binder before the resin or binder has set. A plastic composition of the cinder-like particles mixed with an adhesive binder is then applied over the layer of embedded particles and finally a covering layer of resin or binder impregnated glass fibre may be applied. The cinder-like particles specified are of a volcanic origin. The fluid adhesive in which the particles are embedded may be of the type which solidifies by evaporation of a solvent, such as solvent solutions of asphaltic, coal tar or other resinous materials, or of the type which solidify on cooling such as molten asphalts, coal tar, p resins and synthetic resins, or preferably of a resinous catalyzed setting type such as catalyzed epoxy, phenolic, polystyrene, acrylic esters, resorcinal formaldehyde, polyurethanes, polyester and silicone resins which set at ordinary room temperatures. The cover layer 6, Fig. 1, may comprise asphaltic or coal tar binding paving materials or the like when the invention is applied to roadway surfacing, but may also comprise a binder of the catalyzed resinous adhesive specified. The surface layer can be provided with pigmented or light reflective aggregate particles.
