Abstract
Citric acid is purified of readily carbonisable impurities by heating the mother liquor from a citric acid fermentation process at an elevated temperature with hydrogen peroxide, and subjecting the resultant mixture to treatment with activated charcoal, cationic and anionic exchange resins, and then crystallisation. Preferably the citric acid solution is heated at 80 DEG C. for 1 hour with 10 parts of H2O2 (calculated as 30% hydrogen peroxide) per 100 parts by weight of citric acid, and then at the same temperature 1 part of activated charcoal is added. Thereafter the charcoal is filtered off and the solution passed down a column of both cationic and anionic exchange resins, after which the citric acid is crystallised out. The purification may be made continuous by mixing the crude citric acid solution with the appropriate amount of hydrogen peroxide, and passing them through a reaction zone, e.g. a stainless steel beaker, maintained at 80 DEG C. and treating the issuing solution as previously described. Examples are given which also describe similar purifications where the treatment with H2O2 is omitted. Suitable ion exchanges are those described in Specifications 450,308 and 450,309.
