Abstract
905,715. Forging manipulators. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. May 27, 1960 [May 27, 1959], No. 18046/59. Class 83 (4). A rotary member, particularly the peel 14 of a forging manipulator, is indexed to an approximate angular position by remote control and finally located accurately in the desired position. A manipulator of the kind described in Specification 874,909 has its peel 14 rotated by an hydraulic motor controlled as described in Specification 892,216. The peel carries a pair of circular plates 12 with peripheral notches 15 engageable by rollers 16 on a carriage 17 actuated by a double-acting hydraulic ram 19. These rollers thus locate the peel accurately in its selected angular position. Ram 19 is controlled by a solenoid valve whose circuit is interlocked with the control circuit of the peel rotating motor so that the rollers 16 engage only after rotation ceases. Excessive torsional forces on the peel which may occur during forging cause the rollers 16 to yield and subsequently re-engage. The position of the peel gripping jaws is adjustable on the peel and the position of the rollers 16 may be adjusted relatively to the peel.
