Abstract

A continuous process for obtaining fat from inedible slaughterhouse material comprises; (a) substantially reducing in size all solid portions including bones, (b) heating to 100 DEG - 212 DEG F. to lower the moisture content, (c) further reducing to a predetermined particle size (half-inch or less) in a disintegrator, (d) further heating to 220 DEG -270 DEG F. to rupture fat cells, reduce moisture content, and to assist removal of harmful agents, and (e) centrifugally separating the solid and liquid phases. Vascular substances may be coagulated or denaturized by a steam heated coagulator, before addition after the first reduction step. The homogeneous slurry produced by the disintegration step is preferably directed alternately to two dehydrators by means of a two-way valve, thus while one vessel is heated the other is emptied and refilled. The liquid phase effluent from the centrifuge may be recentrifuged and some of the liquid effluent may be fed to the first heating device to aid heat transfer for the initial heating.
