Abstract
904,959. Air-cooled surface condensers. HAPPEL G.m.b.H., [trading as GEA LUFTKUHLERGESSELLSCHAFT HAPPEL G.m.b.H. & CO., KOMM.-GES.]. Feb. 23, 1960 [March 6, 1959], No. 6278/60. Class 64 (3). In order to prevent the formation of ice at the outlet ends of air-cooled surface condenser elements 1, 2 arranged in V-formation as shown, some of the cooling air which has been drawn by main fans 14 over the relatively warm upper ends of the elements is, at predetermined low temperatures of either ambient air or condensate, directed by auxiliary fans 17 over the relatively cool lower ends of the elements. The auxiliary fans are arranged in flanged apertures 19 in a plate member provided also with other apertures covered by hinged flaps 21, 22. At normal and higher ambient air temperatures these flaps are open to the position shown by the dotted lines in the Figure, and the auxiliary fans are stopped. On a fall in temperature of either the condensate or the cooling air, a thermallysensitive device (not shown) causes the flaps 21, 22 to close and at the same time switches on the auxiliary fans 17 and reduces the speed of the main fans 14.
