904,523. Rolling; coiling and uncoiling. WILSON, L. March 25, 1959 [May 9, 1958], No. 10313/59. Class 83 (4). In a coiling apparatus for strip metal a recoiler turn-table T, an uncoiler turn-table T<SP>1</SP>, and a tension drum D are arranged to rotate at variable speed on vertical axes which are disposed at the corners of a triangle, the turntables T, T<SP>1</SP> being in the same horizontal plane. A tightly-wound strip received from a rolling mill is placed on the turn-table T and fed around the tension drum D to be wound as an " open " coil, having spaced convolutions on the turn-table T<SP>1</SP> in readiness for annealing. The tight coil is located and held on the turntable T by a fluid-operated collapsible and retractable mandrel 10 rotatable with the table. The tension drum D is rotated at a constant speed, which determines the linear speed of the strip by a motor M<SP>11</SP> through a gear-box 50, the strip between the turn-table T and the drum D being maintained under a constant tension by a motor M which drives the turntable through a gear-box 8 and gearing 5, 7 at a continuously increasing speed to compensate for the decrease in coil diameter during winding-off. The diameter of the tension drum is greater than that of the tight coil and the strip is never bent beyond its elastic limit during winding operations. The strip passing from the turn-table T moves between a guide plate 57 and the face of the drum D which is surfaced with a rubber sleeve 56 having a series of circumferential slits 72, 73, Fig. 7, inclined towards the mean transverse plane of the drum, the slitted rubber surface having a self-centring action on the strip. The rubber surface is cleaned by a rotary brush 58 and may be further protected by a thin rubber sheath. The bottom of the strip is guided by a flange 55 on the drum while the top of the strip is guided by a vertically-adjustable roll or arm. A back-up roll 60 (Fig. 6, not shown), which is adjustable radially of the drum carries a rubber sleeve 64 slitted in a manner similar to the sleeve 56, the strip being gripped between the two rubber surfaces. On leaving the drum D the strip passes to vertical guide rolls 65, 66 and with little or no tension is then wound as an " open " coil about a collapsible mandrel 29 on the turn-table T<SP>1</SP>. The turn-table T<SP>1</SP> is driven at a continuously diminishing speed by a motor M<SP>1</SP>, in a manner similar to the table T, to compensate for the increasing diameter of the coil and at an instantaneous speed slightly less than that required to wind a tight coil so that the convolutions are spaced apart. A cord may be used to assist in keeping the convolutions correctly spaced, the cord being withdrawn vertically on completion of the coiling. Safety rolls 67 are provided on the periphery of the turntable T<SP>1</SP>. The " open " coil is removed for annealing by hot and cold gases passed vertically between the convolutions of a coil laid horizontally in a furnace. After annealing the coil is re-wound into a tight coil by replacing on the table T<SP>1</SP> and reversing the drive of the turn-tables and tension drum. The control of motors M, M<SP>1</SP> may be effected by means responding to a measurement of the coil diameter by an optical method. Lifting bars inserted into slots 20, 20<SP>1</SP> in the tables may be used to handle the coils. Specifications 878,497 and 878,499, French Specifications 1,215,437 and 1,222,957 are referred to.
