Abstract
Moulding compositions are continuously produced by continuously preparing a resole or novolak, and mixing same with fillers and other desired additions in a heated mixer, then delivering the blended product to a conventional warmed rolling mill. During the mixing stage, the heating serves to advance the condensation of the resin to the B stage. The resole or novolak are prepared from phenol, m-cresol or 1,3,5-xylenol and formaldehyde in molar ratio 1:0,8-1:1,2, e.g. by passing over a heated ion-exchange resin or basic catalyst (MgO, CaO), to yield phenol-alcohols, followed by heating in a thin-film evaporator, preferably under vacuum, to give the A-stage resin, which is then mixed with the fillers &c. in a heated screen mixer, or in two stages ((a) 60 DEG -80 DEG C., (b) 80 DEG -110 DEG C.) in two mixers. Finally, the composition is passed on to a conventional rolling mill, grinding apparatus and bagging plant.
