Abstract

Surfaces, e.g. those of metal or glass, are coated with a composition comprising finely divided water-insoluble filler materials in a polymer emulsion produced by polymerizing in from 1 to 4 successive and substantially complete steps in the presence of a preformed dispersion of a thermoplastic resin a number of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, not more than three monomers being present in any one step and the monomeric material used in one step differing from that employed in any other step and from any monomeric precursors of the aqueous dispersion. The examples describe the application to steel plates of the following compositions: (1) a mixture of china clay and powdered mica in a dispersion obtained by polymerizing first styrene and then methyl methacrylate in a vinyl acetate/dioctyl maleate copolymer emulsion followed by the addition of di(butoxyethyl) phthalate thereto; (2) a mixture of china clay and powdered mica in a dispersion obtained by polymerizing first styrene and then methyl methacrylate in an emulsion of polyvinyl acetate which contains di(butoxyethyl) phthalate; (3) a composition as in (1) but with detail variations; and (4) china clay and powdered mica in a dispersion obtained by polymerizing a mixture of ethyl acrylate and acrylonitrile in an emulsion of a styrene/methyl methacrylate/dioctyl maleate terpolymer. The effect of the application of the foregoing compositions is to damp flexural vibrations in the steel plates. The compositions may also be used as emulsion paints, as in Example (5) in which a mixture of titanium dioxide, talc and woolastonite is added to the polymer dispersion described in Example (1) and the resulting composition applied to a glass plate. Other preformed polymers, monomers and fillers are listed (see Group IV(a)).ALSO:Coating compositions are produced by polymerizing in from 1 to 4 successive and substantially complete steps in the presence of an already preformed dispersion of at least one thermoplastic resin a number of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, not more than three different monomers being present in any polymerization step and the monomeric material employed on one step differing from that employed in any other step and from any monomeric precursors of the aqueous dispersion, and adding to the resulting dispersion comminuted substantially water-insoluble filler material. Preformed polymers specified are homopolymers of vinyl esters and copolymers with acrylic, methacrylic, maleic and fumaric esters and vinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetals and ketals and polyvinyl alkyl ketanes. Unsaturated monomers specified are styrene, acrylic and methacrylic esters, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and vinyl esters. Fillers specified are clay, talc, mica, exfoliated vermiculite, comminuted granite and quartz asbestos fibres, woolastonite, titanium dioxide, wood, cork and thermosetting resins. Polymerization may be assisted by the use of initiators such as peroxides, hydroperoxides, e.g. cumene hydroperoxide, hydrogen peroxide, persulphates and azobisisobutyronitrile, and activators such as formaldehyde sulphoxylates, bisulphites, polyamines, tertiary amines and iron and cobalt salts. The examples describe: (1) the polymerization of styrene in an emulsion of a vinyl acetate/dioctyl maleate copolymer, followed by the further polymerization therein of methyl methacrylate and the addition to the resulting dispersion of di (butoxyethyl)phthalate and a mixture of clay and powdered mica; (2) the polymerization of styrene in an emulsion of polyvinyl acetate which contains di(butoxyethyl)phthalate, followed by the polymerization therein of methyl methacrylate and the addition to the resulting dispersion of a mixture of china clay and powdered mica; (3) a precess as in (1) but with detail variations; (4) the polymerization of a mixture of ethyl acrylate and acrylonitrile in an emulsion of a styrene/methyl methacrylate/dioctyl maleate terpolymer followed by the addition thereto of di(butoxyethyl) phthalate, china clay and powdered mica; and (5) the addition of titanium dioxide, talc, woolastonite and dibutyl phthalate to an emulsion prepared as in (1) to produce a paint. The products of Examples (11-14) are used for damping flexural vibrations in elastic materials.
