Abstract

893,186. Discharging slag. GAS COUNCIL. April 29, 1958 [Jan. 29, 1957], No. 3166/57. Class 51 (1). In apparatus for discharging molten ash from the reaction zone of a combustion apparatus, the ash is discharged from the reaction zone into a conduit, the initial portion of which is of heat-conducting material, is internally watercooled and is sufficiently short to ensure the flow of ash in the molten condition thereover, and over the surface of the remaining portion of which conduit a stream of water flows whereby the molten ash is quenched and delivered from the conduit in a solid granular state. Means for discharging molten ash from a generator 10, Fig. 1, comprise a downwardly inclined conduit leading laterally from the base of the reaction zone to an ash cooling vessel 18 and formed of a hollow metal member having lower and upper walls 19, 20. The inner and higher end of lower wall 19 is formed as a lip 21 which overlaps a part of the upper wall and which is sufficiently short to ensure the free flow of the molten ash. Cooling water is led from a pipe 22 to the space between the walls to form a cooling jacket and continues to flow down the wall 20 so that the ash solidifies thereon and the mixture of ash and water falls into a bath in the vessel 18. The water is separated from the ash by a sieve 26 in the vessel and is recirculated through the conduit by pipes 22, 24 and a pump 23. A lock hopper 27 having inlet and outlet valves 28, 29 may be provided when gasification in the generator is under pressure. In another construction, a vertical metal conduit has the upper portion surrounded by a metal wall 36, Fig. 2, which forms a water jacket 37 between it and the adjacent portion of the wall 35 of the conduit. The upper end of the wall 36 is curved to form an annular lip 38 above the edge of the wall 35. Cooling water is led to the jacket 37 from an ash cooling vessel 39 through pipes 40, 42 and flows over the upper edge of the wall 35 and flows down the inside face.
