Abstract
A powder mixture comprising one or more of iron, copper and aluminium of 5-60 micron size, with 3%-25% of colloidal graphite is cold pressed at a pressure of at least 2000 atmospheres, sintered at a low temperature and then hot pressed at 1500-4000 atmospheres to form a sintered body with the graphite trapped in the interstices of the metal matrix. The mixture may also contain up to 15% by weight of the iron, copper or aluminium of zinc, cadmium, lead or tin and up to 9% of antimony, cobalt beryllium or manganese. The graphite is preferably smaller than 1 micron and may be added as such or first granulated to a size of 200-500 micron. The metal powders used have a mixed range of sizes between 5 and 60 micron and the sintering temperature must be below the entectic temperature of the mixture. In the examples this temperature varies between 660 DEG C. and 850 DEG C. Specification 892,847 is referred to.
