An apparatus for washing vehicles comprises at least two vertical rotary brushes 5, Fig. 1, each mounted on standards 2 and adapted to swivel about vertical axes, the upper ends of the standards 2 being connected by a horizontal cross bar 3 to form a framework which is supported on wheels 4 running on rails 58 for movement to and fro along the length of a stationary vehicle to clean both sides thereof simultaneously. Each brush 5 is carried by a yoke 10 secured to a. shaft 12 rotatably mounted in a member 11 connecting a pair of arms 9 pivotally connected to the main swivel arms 7. The latter are carried by a shaft 6 attached to one of the standards 2. In both directions of their to and fro motion the brushes 5 are pulled along the sides of the vehicle, the arms 9 being swivelled relatively to the arms 7, as illustrated in Fig. 4, to permit the angular position of the brush supporting assembly to be changed relatively to the vehicle surface, at the end of each wiping movement. The change is effected by pneumatically operated devices, a bolt 40, Fig. 5, which locks the arms 7, 9 in alignment for the wiping movements being first released by a pneumatic cylinder and piston unit 42. The arms 9 are swivelled relatively to the arms 7 by a piston and cylinder unit 38, piston rod 37, gear sector 36, and pinion 34, and the assembly is swung about the shaft 6 by a piston and cylinder unit 13, piston rod 14, crank 15, and bevel gears 16, 17. Each yoke 10 is permitted a limited rotary movement about its shaft 12 from an upright position against the action of springs (not shown).
