Abstract

892,232. Pipe joints. THOMPSON WATER TUBE BOILERS Ltd., JOHN. May 14, 1959 [May 16, 1958], No. 15853/58. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XIII] In a method of assembling a prefabricated cylindrical bank of economiser, reheater, or superheater tubes 1 in a casing 7 of corresponding circular cross-section, the overall external diameter of the bank, including a supporting framework 2 and projecting transverse headers 3, 4 at each end of the bank, is chosen to be slightly less than the internal diameter of the casing by an amount which, after the bank 1 has been inserted axially within the casing, allows the bank to be moved transversely for the ends of the headers to project outwardly beyond base flanges 10 welded around corresponding apertures 8 in the wall of the casing 7. The end of each header is welded at 23 to a co-operating flanged tube 11 and then the bank is moved transversely until annular spigots 20 on the flanges 19 of the tubes 11 engage in corresponding recesses 15 in the base flanges 10 and the bank 1 is located on lugs (not shown) centrally of the casing. The co-operating flanges 19, 10, which are then secured together by bolts (not shown) which pass through clearance holes 22 in the flanges 19 and engage in corresponding threaded blind bores 17 in the flanges 10, being finally seal-welded together at the junctions of their shoulders 24. Instead of providing the flange 19 with an annular spigot 20 both of the flanges 10, 19 made be grooved to receive a separate ring made e.g. of soft iron. In a modification the base flanges 10 are replaced by flanged tubes which are bolted to the flanges 19 of the tubes 11. The bank may comprise e.g. mixed high pressure and low pressure tubes with appropriate headers at each end the projections of the headers, which preferably should extend in line vertically one above the other, in any case being disposed in an axial zone which subtends at an angle of not more than 45 degrees to the centre of the casing.
