Abstract

892,154. Propellent charges. HERCULES POWDER CO. Aug. 15, 1951, No. 19304/51. Class 9(1). A propellent charge 10 is enclosed in a non flammable substance 11 and is provided with a central hole 12 and radial slots 13, the number of slots being so regulated in respect of the web of the charge or grain that the segments formed by the slots burn through perpendicular to the slots at the same time that the web burns through radially, the length of the slots being such that the decrease in the burning surface of the slotted portion compensates for the increase in burning surface along the central hole. Slots may be provided in both ends and a restriction plate 20, of e.g. cellulose acetate, may be provided between the slotted and unslotted parts. These charges may be made by the casting method described in Specification 888,858 [Group V], using plates to give the slots.
