Untreated water withdrawn by a pump 5 from an intake station 1 through a. cleaning (filtering) element 4 in an intake pipe 3 is delivered at 6 into a basin 7 below the level of an overflow weir 8 so that when the pump is stopped, water from the basin 7 flows back along the same route to the intake station 1, backflushing the element 4 and pipe 3 as it does so. Further back-flushing may be provided by water from a tank 9 through pipe 20 and valve 19.
