Abstract
891,427. Radio signalling. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 2, 1961 [Dec. 31, 1959], No. 44495/59. Class 40(5). [Also in Group XL(b)] The polarization of a guided wave is switched rapidly between two planes at rightangles to each other. The switching is performed by a Faraday rotator comprising a waveguide section formed from a dielectric member 4 and a conductive winding 9, the winding 9 being surrounded by a further winding 16 for providing an axial field within a ferrite element 1. Square pulses at the desired switching frequency are applied to the winding 16. In order to prevent mutual inductance between the two windings, winding 9 is divided into two sections extending from the centre of the dielectric member and' wound in opposite senses. The ends of the winding surround the enlarged end portions 5, 6 of the dielectric member and make electrical contact with the walls of a tubular waveguide 3 which provides the input and output of the device. The leads 17 of winding 16 extend through the wall of waveguide 3 at right-angles to the plane of polarization of the input waves.
