890,026. Aircraft runway lights. AUSTRALIA, COMMONWEALTH OF. Nov. 17, 1958 [Nov. 18, 1957], No. 36920/58. Class 75(4) A light for aircraft runways or like uses comprises an annular plate adapted to be placed with its upper surface at ground level, a watertight body extending coaxially below the annular plate, a light deflecting member mounted centrally within the annular plate and supported by a flexible diaphragm, and a spring urging the light deflecting member away from the lamp socket. In the form shown, an annular plate 11 supports a cylinder 12 closed at the bottom by a plate 13 to form a watertight chamber for the light source 18. The plate 11 is closed by a flexible diaphragm 22, e.g. of rubber, reinforced with fabric and supporting at its centre a member 20 in which is mounted a prism 26 for deflecting the light in the desired direction. The member 20 is urged upwards by a spring 24 inside the cylinder 12. The prism may be uni-, bi-, multi- or omnidirectional or the member 20 may itself be formed of light transmitting material. The device may be supported by the plate 11 resting on the soil or be mounted on a base 30 sunk into the soil.
