Abstract

899,856. Photo-electric inspection apparatus. NASH, P. Dec. 29, 1959 [Jan. 12, 1959], No. 29401/61. Divided out of 899,855. Class 40(3). An apparatus for the detection of surface elevations, such as wrinkles, in a moving sheet of normally smooth surface material, e.g. paper, includes a light-gate member 310 which yieldingly contacts one surface of the sheet 2, the line of contact being transverse to the direction of motion. Light from an elongated lamp 8, which may form part of the apparatus of Specification 899,855 passes between the light-gate 310 and sheet 2 to a photo-cell 308 in a housing 306 only when the presence of a wrinkle raises the lightgate, the photo-cell then giving an output. The light-gate may comprise more than one section and one photo-cell across the sheet. The apparatus may be used for the detection of deliberately created elevations for control purposes.
