899,565. Reconstituted tobacco products. MORRIS Inc. PHILIP. Sept. 14, 1960 [Sept. 14, 1959], No. 31634/60. Class 130. [Also in Group VIII] A slurry of tobacco, e.g. of stem parts and/or " fines," is delivered from a spreader 11 as a film 12 on a stainless steel conveyer band 10 and is passed through a hot air dryer 13 operating at a temperature between 110‹ C. and 160‹ C., whereby a dense and slow-burning film of high wet strength and decreased nicotine and sugar content suitable for cigar wrappers is obtained. Re-moistening of the dried film to 20 to 40% by weight moisture content is effected by sprays 18 prior to stripping it from the band 10 by a blade 19, drying it to 12 to 15% moisture content in an oven 22 and forming it into a reel 23. An aqueous slurry may be employed incorporating 3 to 10% by weight of tobacco, a substantial proportion of which has been reduced to a gelatinous state and a substantial proportion, e.g. one-third to one half, of which remains as fibres, the slurry including stems which have been cooked and beaten or refined and leaf fragments which have been ground sufficiently to pass a screen having 80 openings per linear inch. Further grinding or beating of the slurry may be effected prior to film-forming. The slurry may contain glycerine and non- volatile flavourings. Initial film-forming on a Fourdrinier screen may be used.
