Abstract

899,303. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 27, 1959 [Nov. 28, 1958], No. 40342/59. Class 100(1) In sheet separating apparatus, means for preventing the separation of more than one sheet from a succession of sheets comprises two opposed movable endless belts arranged to engage opposite sides of the sheets, one belt acting to advance the sheets, and the other moving in the opposite direction at a slower speed to restrain the sheets. As shown, the apparatus forms part of the sheet separating apparatus described in Specification 876,837, wherein sheets are separated from the top of a pile 20 by a friction belt 22 passing around a non-circular pulley 24. The top sheets are pushed by the belt beneath a plate 30 and over a plate 34 between opposed friction belts 40, 42, the belt 40 having projections 39 thereon and acting to advance the top sheet between guides 60, 66, whilst the belt 42 travels in the opposite direction at a slower speed to restrain the second and subsequent sheets, and has depressions 41 therein not spaced apart the same distance as the projections 39. The belts 40, 42, 22 are driven from the same motor, and the drive includes two solenoid-operated clutches one of which controls the operation of the belt 22, and the other controls the operation of the belts 40, 42.
