Abstract

898,870. Portable tanks, filling and emptying. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd., and PHILLIPS, R. M. July 1, 1960 [July 17, 1959], No. 24624/59. Class 21. [Also in Group XVIII] A portable container 14, Fig. 4, to be filled from below by a liquid supply pipe 4, has a valve 15 in its base and a fixed projection 16 adjacent the valve 15 such that when the container 14 is placed on the supply pipe 4 the projection 16 opens a valve 10 in the pipe 4 and the pressure of the liquid in the pipe 4 then opens the valve 15. The valves 15 and 16 may be biased by springs to the closed position. The pipe 4, Fig. 1, includes a meter 5 preset to deliver a fixed quantity of liquid, for example liquid fuel, through a coin-operated device 7. The liquid may be supplied via a pump started by the insertion of a key in a switch 8. A drain line 12 returns spilt liquid to a main tank 1. When delivery ceases the container 14 is removed and placed on a lower container 18, Fig. 3, the container 18 having a pin 20 that opens the valve 15 in the upper container. Liquid then flows into the lower container until the level therein covers some holes 21 in a recess 19 in the upper wall of the container. The lower container 18 has a feed line 22 to a fuel consuming appliance. Vents 17 and 23 and a level indicator 24 are included where shown. The vent 17 may be replaced by a pressure relief valve.
