Abstract

897,606. Attachments for drilling; milling- machines. RICHARDS & CO. Ltd., GEORGE. Jan. 9, 1961, No. 810/61. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXVI] An attachment for a milling- or drilling- machine for supplying cutting fluid to the tool, comprises a casing 1, enclosing a gear housing 2, a spindle 5 connected to the machine spindle 7 by a tapered socket 6, a spur gear 8 on the spindle which meshes with an idler gear 9 to form a pump, and a hollow torque arm 11 secured to the casing 1 and adapted to be secured to the stationary quill 13 of the machine by a bracket 12, to hold the casing against rotation, and to supply cutting fluid to the pump. Cutting fluid is supplied at low pressure from the machine coolant pump to a port 14, and then passes through a bore 17 in the torque arm, through bores 23, 24, in the casing, to gears 8, 9, where the pressure is boosted. The high-pressure fluid then passes through a bore 25 into a chamber 26 from where it passes through a radial hole to a bore 29 in spindle 5, which connects with a hollow tool 30. A bore 27a in idler spindle 27 equalizes the end load on the spindle, and an adjustable spring-urged pressure-relief valve 32 is connected to the gear chamber 10 by a passage 31, an exhaust passage 36, and a pressure gauge connection 37 being provided. Leakage is prevented by seals 38 on spindle 5, and an oil seal 46 prevents leakage between casing 1 and housing 2. Relief grooves 39, 40, 45 are provided adjacent the seals and are connected to drains 41, 42, 43, 44.
