Abstract

897,575. Centrifugal compressors. SULZER FRERES S.A. June 29, 1959 [July 30, 1958], No. 22302/59. Class 110 (1). A method of operating a single or multistage centrifugal compressor near the surge limit comprises discharging a part of the working medium at a point between the inlet and outlet of the rotor, to a region of lower pressure than that of the rotor delivery. In the rotor housing, a wall 8 bounding the open side of the blade passages 4 has an annular slit 9 located one-third of the blade length from the upstream end. The slit 9 leads into a chamber 10 which communicates through a flow regulating valve 12 with the atmosphere or the suction side of the compressor. To prevent surging the valve 12 is opened to give stable working conditions. Instead of a flow-regulating valve the width of the slit 9 may be made variable. In multi-stage compressors any number of the stages may have outlets for the discharge of the working medium and the controls for varying the outlets may be interconnected. Only the last stage of a compressor may have means for intermediate discharge of the working medium. In compressors with shrouded rotors bores are provided in the shroud plates for the intermediate discharge of working medium. In an alternative construction, the slit 9 is replaced by a number of separate passages to form the intermediate outlet.
