Abstract
The sprouting of potatoes during storage is inhibited by treating them with a composition comprising at least one non-toxic compound having the general formula: <FORM:0897143/I/1> in which Ar represents an aryl group e.g., containing one or more substituent halogen atoms and/or nitro and/or alkyl groups, R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group and R1 represents an alkyl group. Ar may represent benzene or naphthalene. The composition may also comprise a non-toxic diluent such as powdered talc or a liquid, such as etholene glycol, in which the compound dissolves containing, if desired, an emulsifying dispersing and/or wetting agent, liquid compositions may be applied as sprays or aerosols. The following non-toxic compounds may be used: benzene sulphone-N-monoethylamide, benzenesulphone-N-di-isopropylamide, 3-nitrobenzenesulphone-N-dimethylamide, 3-chlorobenzenesulphone-N- monopropylamide,2, 4, 5-trichlorobenzeneosulphone-N-methyl-or dimethyl-amide, 2, 4, 5-trichlorobenzenesulphone -N-diethylamide, 2, 4, 5-trichlorobenzene sulphone-N-di-isobutylamide, 3-chloro-4-methl-ben zene sulphone-N-dimethylamide, 2-nitro-4-methylbenzenesulphone-N-dimethylamide, 3-nitro-4-methylbenzene sulphone-N-monomethylamide, a -naphthalenesulphone-N-dimethylamide.
