Abstract

Pharmaceutical and like tablets comprise coated tablet core having a plurality of foundation sub-coats, an ink-receptive resinous coating of film-forming material containing a lubricative plasticizer on which is ink-printed indicia of a distinguishing colour, and an outer transparent coating over the said resinous coating and indicia. Suitable film-forming materials are shellac, epoxy resin and sandarac; suitable lubricative plasticizers (which reduce the brittleness of the resinous coating and also lubricate the coating so that the tablets may be readily fed into the printing machine) are high molecular weight fatty alcohols and glycerides of higher fatty acids and for use in the transparent outer coating there are mentioned carnauba wax and bees-wax. The coating steps may be carried out by the conventional pan-coating method and the ink-printing may be applied before the resinous coating has completely dried, preferably using an ink which has the same resin base as the coating.
