Abstract

897,044. Magnetic recording methods. AMPEX CORPORATION. June 22, 1960 [July 13, 1959], No. 21906/60. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XL (c)] A magnetic recording is made by widthmodulating a train of pulses B by a signal A, later to be reproduced from the magnetic record, the pulse repetition rate being so related to the gap length of the recording head 14 that the pulses are not recorded but provide the bias for recording their modulated envelope. The modulator 12 comprises a multivibrator 46, 47 which produces square pulses, width modulated by the input waveform A. A portion of the output B is fed by a potentiometer 51 to a power output stage 13 feeding the head 14. The waveform A is played back by a conventional head 18 and amplifier 19.
