Abstract
The Diels-Alder addition-product of cyclopentadiene and maleic anhydride, i.e. 3,6-endomethylene-D 4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, is obtained by passing vapours of benzole forerunnings into a solution of maleic anhydride in an inert solvent, such as toluene, xylene or carbon tetrachloride, the temperature of the solution being maintained sufficiently high that condensation of the carbon disulphide vapours, and other non-reactive constituents of the forerunnings, does not occur. In an example, the vapours of benzole forerunnings at about 60 DEG C. are passed into a solution of maleic anhydride in toluene, maintained at 60 DEG C. to 70 DEG C. The solution is then cooled to 0 DEG C.; and the crystals which separate are filtered off, and recrystallized from petroleum ether.
