Abstract

896,188. Making helically-wound tubes. HOESCH A.G. June 1, 1960 [June 10, 1959], No. 19402/60. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XIX] In apparatus for observing or controlling the dimensions of welded tubes coming from a welding machine, a flexible band is wrapped around at least a considerable part of the periphery of the tube to bear against it substantially without friction and is secured against displacement in the axial direction of the tube, one end is fixed and the other end is subject to a tensile force acting tangentially to the tube periphery and is connected to a device for indicating or recording its tangential movements or for controlling the welding machine in accordance with these movements. A metal strip is bent into a tube in a sleeve 1 and then welded and a chain 4 is wrapped once around the tube emerging from the sleeve, one end 5 being connected to a piston 6 spring- pressed towards the tube and the other end carrying a weight 10 by means of a strap 8 and rack 9 engaging a pinion 17 carrying a pointer 18. Alternate links of the chain carry blocks 19 forming bearings for balls 20 bearing against the tube and hooks 21 on the sleeve prevent the chain moving axially with the tube. The band may be wrapped several times round the tube and a spring may be used instead of the weight 10. Any alteration in diameter of the tube emerging from the sleeve is indicated by the pointer and the operator regulates the welding machine, or the moving end of the chain may be coupled to an automatic regulator for the welding machine. Helically-wound tubes are referred to.
