Abstract

In making a self-supporting, non-woven, fibrous web, e.g. of paper (see Group VIII), liquid is removed from a suspension of fibres, e.g. aqueous paper pulp, to form a web of wet fibres free from hydration bonds. The web 60, Figs. 2, 3 and 4, is then sandwiched between an endless belt 61 perforated by apertures 63 arranged <PICT:0896002/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0896002/IV (c)/2> <PICT:0896002/IV (c)/3> in a desired pattern and the travelling forming wire or screen 62 of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine. The belt 61 passes around rollers 258 and 260. The wire or screen 62 is supported on table rollers 4 and the openings in it are smaller than the apertures 63. Jets 201 of a fluid, e.g. air or steam or a liquid, such as water, containing a dye, an adhesive or a waterproofing or fireproofing composition, are sprayed from nozzles 238 through the belt 61, the web 60 and the wire or screen 62, or vice versa, to re-arrange the wet fibres in a stable formation corresponding, generally, to the pattern formed by the apertures 63. Suction may be applied by suction boxes 5, 5a and 400. U.S.A. Specification 1,999,402 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 836,397.
