Abstract

894,826. Axial-flow compressors. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. March 26, 1959 [March 26, 1958], No. 9764/58. Class 110 (1). In a multi-stage axial-flow compressor, adjustable-pitch guide-blades 11 are formed with hollow trunnions at their outer ends, each trunnion being surrounded by a sleeve 12 by means of which it is journalled in a pair of bushes 17 carried by a recessed plate 14 bolted at 15 to the outer wall 10 of the intake passage of the compressor. Flanges on the sleeve 12 and on the hub 13 of a rocker arm 18 engage the flanges of the bushes 17 to hold the blade 11 against axial movement, the sleeve 12 and hub 13 being secured to the blade trunnion by a pin 16. When the number of blades 11 is even, all rocker arms 18 are double-ended, and are each connected to the two adjacent rocker arms by means of link-pins 20, eye-bolts 21 and sleeves 23 which are adjustably threaded on the eyebolts. When the number of blades 11 is odd, two adjacent blades have single-ended rocker arms 18a which are not connected to one another. One of the rocker arms (which, when the number of blades is odd, is preferably the one diametrically opposite the two single-ended rocker arms 18a) has an additional arm connected to an actuator, by means of which the blades 11 are adjusted in unison in accordance with, say, compressor rotational speed. If the outer wall 10 expands or contracts, causing a variation in the spacing between the blades 11, the two rocker arms 18 adjacent the rocker arm which is connected to the actuator, and each alternate rocker arm thereafter, will rock slightly to accommodate the variation in spacing, the other rocker arms being unaffected.
