Abstract
In a process for reducing the carbon monoxide content of a fuel gas, such as carburetted water gas or oil gas, by reacting the carbon monoxide with steam in the presence of a catalyst to form carbon dioxide and hydrogen, the gas is first passed over a nickel sub-sulphide catalyst at 300 DEG -500 DEG C., to remove substances which reduce the activity of the catalyst employed in the carbon monoxide/steam reaction. The nickel subsulphide may be mixed with the promoters listed in Specification 587,070 (Group III) and supported on china-clay or porous corundum. The catalyst employed in the carbon monoxide/steam reaction may be a chromia-promoted iron oxide.
